For Vanshika, this wasn’t just another present she picked up on a whim. Four years back, I moved to Germany chasing higher studies and a career. Like so many Indian students abroad, she was juggling classes with a job, and eventually landed a part-time role at Siemens Healthineers in IT Project Management.In a conversation with TOI, she says, “Four years ago, I moved to Germany to pursue my dreams. The very first thing I wanted to do with what I earned was buy a gift for my mom, a small way to thank her for every sacrifice she’s made for our family. She deserves the world, and I’ll spend the rest of my life treating her like the queen she is.”She added further, “Just one year into my masters, I landed a full time job as a project management specialist with a leading automotive company which was also in the news as I was among the youngest women from Himachal Pradesh to grab such a package abroad. My parents were super proud”And to anyone else out there grinding away, trying to make something of themselves, she had this to say: “To anyone out there pushing through the grind: keep going. Making your parents proud and seeing those happy tears is a feeling nothing else in this world can match.”

The story behind the tears

And when she was born, there was no shortage of pressure from relatives, the usual, tiring “you should try for a boy” kind of talk that so many Indian families are still stuck with.Her parents said no to all of it. “I am an only child and there was a lot of pressure on my parents to have a baby boy. They never listened and chose to raise me the best way possible,” she told TOI.They put everything, money, time, hopes into her education and her dreams. So when the opportunity to move abroad came up, they didn’t hold her back, even knowing it meant they’d be alone in a way they hadn’t been before.She calls it one of the biggest sacrifices they’ve ever made for her.“They chose to send their only child abroad for her better future, knowing that they would have to live alone. It was a big sacrifice, but they did that so I could grow.”So the moment she started earning, she already knew exactly what she wanted to do with that money. “Whatever I could save, I used it to buy these gifts for my mom because no one ever did that for her. This video showed her reaction. It was too emotional for us.”
